“There is no right more fundamental

than the right to marry the person that you love and to raise a family” said attorney David Boies in a May 27th 2009 grandstand press conference. Even if his motives were not merely political, his formulation is absurd on its face. Until there is a Stalker’s Bill of Rights the idea that anyone could simply say “I want that one” and demand that the unhappy object of desire submit to marriage as a matter of “fundamental right” because the suitor asserts “love” is, to put it simply, nuts.

A Thousand Watts of Polka

It isn’t just that people who drive around with ridiculously over-powered car stereos blasting their taste in music into other people’s lives are thoughtless and disrespectful. It isn’t just that they lack a basic repect for the music itself that would have prevented them from taking away other people’s freedom to listen or not listen to whatever they choose. It isn’t even that the pollution they spew is at the lowest frequencies where the involuntary effect on their victims is so unpleasant that it is routinely used by filmmakers to convey a sense of foreboding, animals react to it instinctively by looking for cover, and it has even been looked at by the military for possible use as a weapon.
